For Wednesday's class please read the selections from the Qur'an (pp. 282-311) in your Novak anthology. What do you see here that helps explain how Islam becomes a world religion?
If you have time, please read read also select whatever sections of the Hadith interest you. If you need to catch up on blog points, you may comment on additional Qur'an or Hadith passages for extra credit. Please address each Qur'an or Hadith passage you talk about in a separate paragraph.

ReplyDeleteAnd to you [Muslims]We have revealed the Book with the truth. It confirms the Scriptures which came before it and stands as a guardian over them.
This shows there are connections between Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. These connections are looked at differently by the three religions but there is a connection. People feel that that the road they have taken is the best road and people that follow other roads are fools, but if they acknowledge there are other roads it makes them frightened that perhaps they picked the wrong one. Frightened people do crazy things like lashing out at people on the different roads - why can't we just wave and say have a nice trip, see you at the finish.
Because Muhammed says the way to heaven is through the sword. Strict interpretations still call Jews and Christians "Infidel" (non-believers)
DeleteAllah guarantees that He will admit the Mujahid (holy fighters) in His Cause into Paradise if he is killed, otherwise He will return him to his home safely with rewards and war booty."
All three religions have a common thread of decency toward their fellow man. They seem to be seeking peace and understanding through their respective religions. Christianity has the bible as its inspired word of God and Jesus states that "...no man comes unto the father but through me." To me Islam and Judaism are less clear about specific paths.
ReplyDeleteIslam with the writings we read, seems to have love of all living things as a core value. Compassion for family, the infirmed and widows is a great attribute. Helping others is a way of gaining favor with Allah. It has passages about being truthful. Ideas of having people witness trading or the borrowing of money as to not create conflict. All of these ideas are appealing to masses of people. Rules and morality are things which are ways in which one can counter act those bad/wrong things one may have done. These concepts are ones which many people want.

Closer than Our Jugular Vein
After reading a number of these passages from the Qur’an, I was struck by the level of what I thought was basic scientific knowledge. Then, knowing from further studies that Islam encouraged the sciences and the arts, especially in Moorish Spain, I could see these attributes of this religion as helping it to be embraced by the modern world. It seems as if some of conservative Islam today would shun this connection with the corruption of the Western World, nevertheless, in those early days there was much more delight in extra-Qur’anic studies. Were the moderation of some Eastern interpretations and accommodations for the rest of the religious world granted as they are in Indonesia, I could see Islam being much more rapidly embraced.

ReplyDeleteThese Hadith deal with the death of a young girl. The gist of all the pronouncements is that those in attendance should:
• Start on the right side of the body
• Begin washing first the parts washed in ablution
• Do this washing 3, 5, 7 or more odd times
• Anoint with Sidr
• Anoint with camphor
• Braid the hair in three braids
• Place one braid in the front and two on the sides
• Inform the prophet
• He will give his waist sheet for a shroud
• Shroud the body
These ten pronouncements seem quite repetitive and some even contradictory, especially on the placement of the braids.

ReplyDeleteConception and destiny
It seems from the apt descriptions of child development here that Muslim physicians must have been quite well acquainted with miscarriages. I well remember a photographic journey taken of fetuses in the nine monthly stages of development by Life magazine or one of that ilk in the 1960’s. The photos were taken of children aborted in Sweden, I believe, for that was illegal in the US at the time.
Predestination seems also quite evident.
A man spreading a new message of “you don't have to stand for this, rise up against your oppressor” in this arid waste land, where survival is a struggle...offers a new hope. A hope that's in your hands, die in battle in the name of the lord is an instant ticket to eternal paradise. “Allah guarantees that He will admit the Mujahid (holy fighters) in His Cause into Paradise if he is killed, otherwise He will return him to his home safely with rewards and war booty." (Bukhari :: Book 4 :: Volume 52 :: Hadith 46)
ReplyDelete"Successful indeed are the believers, Who are humble in their prayers, And who keep aloof from what is vain,And who are givers of poor-rate, And who guard their private parts, Except before their mates or those whom their right hands possess, for they surely are not blameable, But whoever seeks to go beyond that, these are they that exceed the limits; And those who are keepers of their trusts and their covenant, And those who keep a guard on their prayers; These are they who are the heirs, Who shall inherit the Paradise; they shall abide therein." (Koran 23.1-.11) This reminds me of the beatitudes except it says less specifically if we live right then we will inherit paradise. "If a man frees his share of a slave and has enough money to cover the full price of the slave justly evaluated for him, he must buy out his partners so that the slave is completely freed. If he doesn't have the money, he partially frees him."(Malik :: Book 38 : Hadith 38.1.1) This shows that you cannot just partially help someone, if you are going to perform a selfless act it must be wholeheartedly and you must follow through.
ReplyDeleteWhen I talked about Buddhism, I mentioned the set of instructions (Four Noble Truths) that it came with. I think Islam is aided by its own set of instructions, the Five Pillars of Islam.
ReplyDelete1) Testimony that is no other God
2) Giving of Alms
3) Daily Prayers 5 rimes a day
4) Fasting during Ramadan
5) Hajj -Pilgrimage to Mecca
I also think that 10a- Believers are a single Community sets itself up to be a successful world religion. "Your community is but one community, and I am your only LOrd. Therefore serve Me. People have divided themselves into factions, but to Us they shall return."
To me this basically says, Jews and Christians may believe in the same God as we do (Muslims) but they have strayed from the pack and someday they will join us.
As for the Hadith, the section that caught my eye was about hot baths.
Dawud :: Book 31 : Hadith 3998
Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin:
The Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) forbade to enter the hot baths. He then permitted men to enter them in lower garments.
So I guess as long as you keep your trunks on, hot baths are A-OK.
Boy, not just a few Christian athletes must be going to perdition!

ReplyDeleteI think that Islam grew to be a world religion for a few reasons. The first is that it is fundamentally a continuation of an idea that was already present in other world religions. Islam claims to revamp the things that Judaism and Christianity got wrong. I think that this had a huge impact on how Islam became a world religion; it was able to piggy-back off of Judaism and Christianity. The second is that as we discussed in class today, it is a "mans religion". Men are given a lot of power over their wives and are given the power to fight others who don't believe what they do.
Hadith, 81. Limits And Punishments Set By Allah (Hudood). I already found out I make a horrible Jew and I think I'd make a horrible Moslem as well. After attending the synagog with Jerry last friday, I immediately came home and started defrosting some pork chops, then mowed the lawn on the sabbath (actually there were no stars out yet so..). Reading through the Hadith I realize that my fancy for the pilzner would get me in a lot of trouble. The first 4-5 verses were of Muhammed himself beating people for being drunk. It also said that someone who was drinking was not a believer while drunk; does that make them an infadel and fair game to kill then? Iraq was a very liberal place as far as the Middle East goes, so there was drinking, just frowned upon.
ReplyDeleteI would not feel sorry for one who dies because of receiving a legal punishment, except the drunk, for if he should die (when being punished), I would give blood money to his family because no fixed punishment has been ordered by Allah's Apostle for the drunk.( Bukhari :: Book 8 :: Volume 81 :: Hadith 769) this passage makes it a little confusing, since everyone gets beaten but I see this as a glimmer of hope me. Or at least as a life insurance policy for the family.
